Once, when I was in 6 th grade , I went to some inter school competion. There were children of my age talking in sign language. I was curious how they understand each other. Again, in the same year we visited a speech and hearing treatment centre. I was so sad to see very young people struggling to learn sugn language. And this year, I finished reading an amazing book called - Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly. She was also a sign language interpreter. After reading this book, I really want to learn sign language! This book is an inspirational book for people of all all ages.
Here's the synopsis by the author :
From fixing the class computer to repairing old radios, twelve-year-old Iris is a tech genius. But she’s the only deaf person in her school, so people often treat her like she’s not very smart. If you’ve ever felt like no one was listening to you, then you know how hard that can be.
When she learns about Blue 55, a real whale who is unable to speak to other whales, Iris understands how he must feel. Then she has an idea: she should invent a way to “sing” to him! But he’s three thousand miles away. How will she play her song for him?
This book also made me to learn more about whales and their communication system. Before this year, I studied about infrasonic waves and how whales, bats, dolphins uses this to communicate. I learnt many new things about sound waves by this books. Iris and her determintation about finding the whale and Iris being ignored just because she can't hear melts our heart. This book is a must read, inspirational book.

ReplyDeleteThank you Maith!
DeleteI know this book! My sister (who loves anything to do with the ocean) has read this book and it's one of her favourites. I have yet to read it, but I have started teaching myself ASL (American Sign Language). I'm using an app and YouTube videos to learn and practice. It's going well so far, but slow. I definitely agree that it is a fascinating language. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, you should read it. It's really good!
